Tim Winter
Tim Winter
Tim is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney researching cultural heritage in conflict transformation and post-conflict societies, and the relationship between culture, tourism and development in Asia.
He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester, UK and prior to joining Sydney Tim spent two years at the Asia Research Institute, Singapore.
He is author of Post-conflict Heritage, Postcolonial Tourism; Culture, Politics and Development at Angkor, and editor of Expressions of Cambodia: the Politics of Tradition, Identity and Change, and Asia on Tour: exploring the rise of Asian Tourism.
Two years spent living in Cambodia led to a deep interest in the challenges which emerge around cultural heritage in the developing world and in societies suffering from, or recovering from, periods of armed conflict. Tim is now looking at such issues in Kashmir, Croatia, Sri Lanka and Yemen. Tim is also working on the social impacts of the fast growing Asian tourism industry; and the relationship between heritage, tourism and development, most notably within the context of Indian cities. He has co-organised two international conferences in Singapore: ‘Of Asian Origin’: Rethinking Tourism in Contemporary Asia (September 2006), and Heritage in Asia: Conflicting Values and Converging Forces (January 2009) .
Having consulted for the World Bank, Getty Conservation Institute and World Monuments Fund, he is also member of ICOMOS, and Editor of their Australia journal Historic Environment.
